This statement outlines the policy at Garner Internal Medicine regarding the prescribing of controlled substances. Due to the clinical and legal complexities regarding the prescribing of controlled substances in primary care practices, the policy at Garner Internal Medicine is to only prescribe controlled substances in very rare circumstances and then only for a very brief period of time.
Specifically regarding pain management, we recognize that the diagnosis and treatment of pain is integral to the practice of medicine. We believe that the best choice for our patients with chronic pain concerns is to be evaluated and treated by Specialists at a comprehensive pain management center. Fortunately, we have many qualified pain management Specialists in our area and GIM will be able to provide a referral for our patients when needed.
Finally, please note that this policy is not intended for our patients in active cancer treatment, palliative care, or end-of-life care.
